"Do whatever it takes to make it happen, be scrappy, but remember to have fun while you are doing it!"

This is the 4th Year that Diane Dempsey has created a cover for the holiday edition of the Vintage Camper Trailers magazine. Taking inspiration from one of her Christmas cards, Diane has created another mid-century inspired cover for our 40th issue! As an admirer of Diane's style, and always interested in peoples "vintage journey", I asked Diane about her business.  I am always interested in hearing about peoples business and what inspires them. Diane shared her thoughts and we organized them in this Q and A. Get to know Diane and how she came to be a part of the trailerite community.

OUR INTERVIEW...

  • How did the idea for your business come about?
I began my career as a graphic design + Illustration major at The Ringling College of Art + Design. After many years as an art director in advertising agencies I began a freelance Studio. http://diane-dempsey-design-studio.com/
Early on, many of my clients were museums, you know those block buster exhibitions of the 1990s? That experience has informed my creative side to love historical reference. Since I was also experienced with licensing and product development (some years were spent as the Art Director for the Cabbage Patch Kids) I wanted my own products featuring my artwork. My husband and I began the line back in 2004, which included posters, wrapping paper and year round greeting cards.

  • What is your connection with mid century/trailers?
My first illustration featuring a camper was the "Woodie Wagon Christmas card".
https://www.retrochristmascardcompany.com/product/woodie-wagon-christmas-cards/
It had a tiny Shasta camper in the distance. I got such a response from my Facebook followers that loved the little trailer in the distance that I wanted to keep them happy and the next year came out with Travel Trailers Christmas Cards.
  • How do you generate new ideas?
I listen to my audience each year, and I stay true to my vintage roots by researching the nostalgia and traditions of Christmas' past. I ask my Facebook followers to suggest ideas each year around mid spring. I find that the best ideas are derived from the shared experiences that we all have growing up. My husband and I brainstorm ideas while listening to classic Christmas tunes and playing our own game of "Oh I remember when...". It can be a challenge since we are in our 13th year of creating Retro Christmas Cards.

  • Why just Christmas cards?
Actually it isn't just Christmas cards at all. I also have a line of seasonal and everyday home decor and gift items. You can see them here: https://www.retrochristmascardcompany.com/retro-gifts-and-home-decor/

  • Is this a part time hustle or a full time career?
It was a seasonal avocation at first but now it is a year round endeavor. I do take on freelance design and illustration assignments and an occasional children's book. You can see my commercial art portfolio here:   http://diane-dempsey-design-studio.com/

  • How do you build a successful customer base? How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?
The best thing I have going as far as promoting my business is to keep active in Social Media. Facebook has been wonderful and I find many like minded folks who love the vintage lifestyle on many different levels, from collecting vintage ornaments, to restoring Mid-Century Modern Homes to refurbishing vintage campers. I find FB interest groups that help me meet new folks everyday!

  • How many hours a day do you work on average? Can you describe/outline your typical day?
I work between 6-8 hours everyday. 7 Days a week. I work in my home studio, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and the like crooning away Christmas classics while I illustrate, design, promote or blog.

  • What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
My favorite part of entrepreneurship has been, by far, working with my husband. He manages the business aspect, keeps us organized and sees that every shipment gets to you as fast and inexpensively as possible. He was also the catalist that got Retro Christmas Card Company on Amazon. Which doubled our business. He also keeps me laughing and understands my kischy quirks.

  • What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
There have been many! I have to say the most recent was the introduction of our new line of Retro Christmas Ornaments. It took a great deal of time to research the materials and resources, and to have them "Made In The USA", but I am really proud of how they turned out. You guys will love the Santa's Vintage Camper Ornament!  https://www.retrochristmascardcompany.com/retro-christmas-ornaments/

  • What piece of advice would you give to self starters who want to become entrepreneurs?
Love what you do. Be fierce about doing the very best job you can on each and every piece. Work night and day and everyday to make it happen and keep at it to keep it growing. Do whatever it takes to make it happen, be scrappy, but remember to have fun while you are doing it!
